Geert Ooms says:

“As the carp are not entirely awake in early spring and feeding slow, you need to make sure that they get ‘nailed’ on the slightest movement once they pick up your hook bait. That’s why I choose to fish with my hook links a lot shorter at this time of year than usual; hook links of between 3 and 5 inch seem to work fine for my angling. This is where long-shank hook come into play also as these have a ‘fast’ hooking potential, which assure good hook holds when fished with short hook links.”
